Originating in China, the Pekingese is categorized as a toy breed. It was first popular in the Chinese court. The name is taken from the city of Peking. Pekingese are both lap dogs and wonderful companions, bonding very closely with their humans. Their owners often describe them as opinionated, possibly a carry over from their royal heritage. One way this comes across is that Pekingese are not afraid to communicate their feelings.
Their beautiful long manes and coats require frequent grooming to keep them in good condition. Some think that the mane gives the Pekingese a lion like look.
